Meet Merit, and the Happy Brezel way

Born in Germany, Merit is the founder of Happy Brezel. She holds a Magister in German Studies, Art History and Fine Arts from Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, and a Master’s in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute of Art in London.

A resident of Singapore for over 15 years, she began teaching a decade ago at Inlingua – School of Languages, where she quickly became Head of the German Department. Just before the pandemic, she founded Happy Brezel to focus on tailored, online German classes. From 2022 to 2024 she also taught German at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), stepping away in 2024 to dedicate herself fully to Happy Brezel.

Her students consistently achieve outstanding results in the Goethe-Zertifikat, AP Exams, telc and TestDaF, and have a good time getting there.

How we teach

Effective, and genuinely enjoyable

Renowned for her dynamic style, Merit creates a lively, supportive space where studying German feels rewarding, and fun.

  • Built around you

Lessons start from your goals, your level, and the topics you actually want to talk about, not a fixed syllabus.

  • Grammar made clear

Complex grammar, explained simply. Merit is known for breaking down tricky structures so they finally click.

  • Culture & context

Lessons are enriched with cultural and historical context, so you learn the living language, not just the rules.

  • Practice that sticks

You get slides and homework after every session, and plenty of real speaking practice in between.

Why a smiling pretzel?

Learn German with a Smile

The Brezel, the pretzel, is one of Germany’s warmest, friendliest symbols. Ours is smiling on purpose. Learning a language can feel intimidating, so we keep it human: patient, encouraging, and full of small wins. You’ll make mistakes (everyone does, das ist okay), and you’ll keep going because the lessons are something to look forward to.

Whether you’re starting from your very first Hallo or polishing the last details on the way to C2, we’re here to help you speak German with confidence, and a smile.

Say Hallo
